Anxiety Attacks in Children and Adolescents
Has your child refused to attend school? Perhaps they avoid family activities choosing to spend time by themselves. Often, we conceive of panic attacks as an adult disorder. If this is the case then you've forgotten climbing the rope in gym class, asking a girl to the big dance, or reading a report in front of the class. There are many experiences that since a child is immature and inexperienced can be stressful to the point of inducing a panic attack. For most children, feeling this sensation from time-to-time is perfectly natural and can even be a healthy part of growing. But how do you recognize when your child is troubled with an unhealthy string of anxiety attacks?
Since a panic attack is a physiological response to an event that your body sees as stressful. These stressful events cause your heart to beat faster, your breath quickens and becomes shallow, blood rushes to your extremities to give them more energy to fight or run. Sometimes this response can be so extreme that it feels like you may die or your heart will jump out of your chest. This is a normal response to dangerous situations. A panic disorder is when you have this response without a good reason to panic.
While there may be several reasons that are non-psychological in adults for panic attacks to occur, these are very rare in children. The vast majority of panic attacks in children are because they do not possess the emotional maturity to handle a situation without panicking. It is typically not the thyroid, adrenal glands, or other organic causes.
When your child is consistently experience panic episodes you need to examine the stresses in their life. For example, is the family involved in a divorce? Has there recently been a death? Has Mom or Dad started a new job or had to travel? Has your child started at a new school or have you moved to a new neighborhood? If your child is between 10 and 14 years old they may be starting puberty. Is the family under financial strain? Has there been an illness? Is there alcoholism or abuse happening in the family?
All of these issues are complex situations to deal with as an adult. If you recognize any of the symptoms of panic in your child and can correlate it to any of the situations mentioned above, you may have just discovered the cause of your child's problem.
So once you notice an anxiety disorder in your child what should you do? A very effective method of dealing with child anxiety is counseling. Often this counseling will involve the whole family because issues are rarely isolated to one child in the family. A counselor will help your child to develop and discover healthy coping strategies that will help them to be happy and successful. Sometimes it may also require you to make some changes in your life such as seeking to improve your marriage, treat alcoholism, or find a job that is healthier for your family even if it does not pay as much. Some children respond well to involvement in sports or martial arts to build greater confidence.
No child deserves to be plagued by fear regardless of the reason. Once you recognize the signs of chronic anxiety in your child you should act quickly to help them to overcome this problem in a safe way.

Treatment For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
